What is the chemistry behind the alcohol detectors used by the traffic police?

a common Breathalyzer uses an acidic solution of potassium dichromate.When inhaled air contains alcohol .. the dichromate oxidizes the alcohol to acetic acid, while the dichromate is reduced to Cr 3 .. The amount of Cr ^ 3 produced is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol in the sample.
