Ignition Interlock State Laws
Renting a car in another state with a "Z-Restriction" on my MA license?
Hello, I live in Massachusetts and recently got my license back after having it suspended following a "brush" with the law (DUI, stupidity on my part!!). The problem is I now have a "Z-Restriction" on my license, which means that I cannot operate a vehicle in MA that does not an ignition interlock device installed in it.
Now my question is: I'm planning on travelling to California in the next few weeks on business and was thinking about trying to rent a car while I'm out there, so I was curious if anyone else in my situation has had success doing so (renting a car across state lines w/the same restriction)? I don't know whether this law ONLY applies within the state of MA, or if I'll be unable to rent a car anywhere in the US. I'm afraid if I call the rental car companies ahead of time & explain my situation, they'll just tell me to take a hike, so any help is greatly appreciated as I'm NOT interested in breaking the law AGAIN!!
You would really need the rental company and ask them because these are the typical questions that they will ask you in this situation but since you need to have the interlock install, then you would not be allowed to rent from any company..
