A law adopted January 1, 2009 makes first DUI offenders in Illinois to choose a BAIID, Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device, installing retaining their Drivers License Drivers license with equipment (MDDP) instead of the suspension.

The device measures BAIID sobriety. It looks like a mobile phone and is connected to the ignition. Drivers must blow into a plastic tube to the ignition to start every time she behind the wheel of their car and must periodically blow into the tube while driving to ensure that there's someone not start the car on their behalf. If a driver blows a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 or higher, the car will not start.

The device remains in place while the driver's license would be suspended six months for drivers to undergo a breath test and fail and 12 months for drivers who refuse test.

Once a first DUI offender is convicted, the device is required. Illinois is one of the six countries to mandate a law BAIID first offenders, but it is the largest state in the law office.

In a press release from the office of the governor earlier this year, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said: "This is … a new and innovative approaches to deal with a very serious traffic safety issue. There are too many people slain and wounded each year by drunk drivers. This law uses technology for DUI offenders in an effort to target our roads safer, while posing no inconvenience for the vast majority of Illinoisans who are safe and responsible drivers. Most importantly, this law will save lives. "

Chicago attorney Harold Wallin BAIID mused that the device is first time DUI offenders to resume a normal life, but stated that the machine is "expensive and painful for the people. It is humiliating to have that device in their car." The device costs $ 100 dollars Installing and $ $ 110 one months rent for the Illinois Secretary to control.

Susan McKeigue, executive director of the Illinois chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) that "it would go, but it goes well."

About 50,000 people a year are arrested in the state for drunk driving, which 40,000 of these arrests are the first DUI [http://www.totaldui.com] offenders.
