Rust stains
Rust is a red-orange chemical that is produced when iron corrodes in the presence of oxygen and water. When rust forms, it "puffs up" the surface of the metal is rusting, which can make surface rust and flake easily rub off on fabrics or get picked by fluids and transferred to driveways and walkways. The rust particles then serve in the porous material and can be a real headache to remove if you do not know what to do. Follow along, and we show you what to do!
Rust stain removal from clothes
As usual, your first step should always check the care instructions for the article of clothing is to make sure you clean too late for the process described here. If not or you are not sure - or take it to your dry cleaners or test below process in an inconspicuous area to test for damage or discoloration.
1. Pad the back of the rust stained area with several layers of paper towels.
2. Saturate the stain with rust straight lemon juice. (fresh or bottled will work)
3. Place the clothing in direct sunlight or somewhere warm and let the lemon juice to dry.
4. Was normal.
5. If the rust stain remains and the article of clothing is white, the substance can you cook in a solution of cream of tartar and water (use 1 tablespoon cream of tartar per cup water). This solution should remove the stain, but can also leave a residue so once the mold is removed should the article normally laundering.
6. Failing both of the above methods, try saturating the stain with a household cleaner that contains oxalic acid and then money normally. Your local grocer, a few of these products (Bar Keeper's Friend is a common one) to read the labels - but be warned, these products are more likely to damage or discolor your clothes so this is a final resort.
Rust Stain Removal from Carpet
1. Vacuum as much of the rust as possible.
2. Saturate the stain with lemon juice and let them sit for 5 minutes.
3. Using a clean white towel or several paper towels, blot the stain to remove as much rust as possible of the lemon juice.
4. Using a solution of detergent and water, re-saturate the rust stain and gently scrub with a toothbrush or small scrub brush. Scrub only within the limits of the stain, because it can spread it. The purpose of the scrub to the rust from the carpet to loosen so that it can be removed.
5. Blot the area dry. Repeat this until the stain is removed.
Rust stain removal tools and Pans
The following instructions are best used on objects that only slightly rusted. As confronted with severe rust and pitting you should consider a commercial rust remover or replace the tool completely.
1. Place the object to be cleaned in a container large enough to immerse the rusted area under water. A large pot will work if your sink.
2. Fill the container with a mixture of ¼ cup lemon juice for every 4 cups water - or - 1 cup white vinegar for every 4 cups water and let soak overnight.
3. If necessary, scrub the item with a scouring pad, steel wool is also an option, but try and use the least abrasive solution that works. If the rust stain is stubborn, increasing the strength of the solution and allow soaking for another 6-12 hours for scrub again.
