Infection of the pleura can sometimes lead to an excess of air or fluid buildup in the pleural cavity. A chest tube / drainage kit is used to remove the building the body and promote healing. To understand how a drainage kit works, it helps to mind's-eye view of the pleura and the purpose of the pleural cavity and in the overall.

The lungs are covered with a thin membrane known as the pleura. This transparent membrane lines the inside of the chest walls. The pleura is actually two layers of a cloak over the folds on itself. Pleurisy results from a sort of most lung infection, but it can also result in cases of lung cancer and other lung problems or caused by the inhalation of certain contaminants / pollutants.

Pleurisy an abnormal accumulation of either air or fluid in the pleural cavity. The pleural space refers to the area within the thoracic cavity (chest) and surrounds the lungs. Because the lung's pain sensors are located in the pleura, an inflammation of the membranes can cause mild to extreme pain, usually exacerbated by coughing or sneezing.

When the pleural cavity is filled with liquid or bubbles, the air or fluid to be released to keep the lungs collapse. A drainage kit (Pleurx Drainage Kit is one example) is used to help those surplus air or fluid from the body and the protection of the lungs.

A kit consists of a long drainage tube (chest tube, also known as a tube thoracostomy.) The tube is usually made from a kind of flexible plastic. The tube is inserted through the skin by a surgical procedure known as thoracotomy. The end of the tube lies in the pleural space. A probe and / or camera is inserted through the tube sometimes during the operation to ensure that the end of the tube is correctly placed so that drainage will be effective.

The tube is then attached to the surrounding skin to keep the tube from shifting. The whole area is covered with a sterile bandage on the incision from infection.

The It also has vacuum drainage bottle. The other end of the chest tube is inserted into the vacuum bottle. This bottle is used to aspirate, vacuum or 'suck' the excess liquid. The contents of the bottle is then disposed of as medical waste.

Drainage kits may come with vacuum bottles in various sizes. (For example, Drainage Kit Pleurx the bottle is 1000 ml. Capacity.) Sewerage kits usually come with items such as sterile dressings, gauze and alcohol swabs. Some, like the Pleurx Drainage Kit, include gloves and clamps.
