My friend went to an interview and they asked him some personal questions. Is this normal?

My friend went to apply for a job at a security company where he would be replenished ATMs. He was interviewed on the spot and the lady read a questionnaire and asked if he was married / divorced / engaged / Had a girlfriend. Then he said that yes, he had a girlfriend, she asked him my name, phone number and how long we would have together. She continued to ask more questions about drugs / alcohol / his tattoos and if he would be willing to take a lie detector test. I understand the questions but why would they need to know something about me? He said that she was just 60 years old so there's no way she was interested in him or something and he thought that she might ask questions just to see how he reacts and if he tells the truth or something. However, I am a little creeped out that a place of work "needs" to know about someone. Someone any idea why this would be whether it is only because the confidence they need in him for the job?

It is illegal to ask any questions about your marital status. The answers to these questions can be used to deny you employment as the Company may be prejudiced against married or divorced persons. They are within their rights to inform him that a drug test and polygraph test part of the pre-employment criteria. If he is not the job, then I would report this person to their supervisor or an officer of the company. She lays her company in jeopardy of a lawsuit.
