Making scented candles is one of the first ways early candle makers are beginning to expand their repertoire of techniques as they gain experience in the craft of candle making. While the basic process is very simple - add a scent to the melted - there are ways it can go wrong. I made some mistakes beginner when I started. I hope this article will help you avoid.
The first is to ensure that the fragrance you want is compatible with the wax for your candle. You can not just a smell.
The first impetus for many people (it was mine) to try to add a favorite perfume or aftershave to melted. This is a good chance of ruining the party. Water and alcohol based odor not combine with wax. Believe me they do not.
The safest way to be sure of the fragrance is compatible with was is to buy fragrance especially for making candles. Candle supply stores have a seemingly endless assortment of smell. You can also combine fragrances to create your own unique blends.
If you want, you can usually use essential oils also. Most essential oils will work well with paraffin.
Gel candles smell good hold, but not all will work with oil scents candle gel. Candle gel is not one was real (it is a polymerized mineral oil) so you can not automatically assume that a scent that worked well was working with gel.
You can test compatibility gel with a scent by mixing a drop of essential oil to use with a drop or two of mineral oil. If they mix well and can fully use the oil your candle fragrance.
Again, the most reliable way to know is a fragrance will be compatible to buy scents specifically for gel candles.
Another mistake beginners is to add too much fragrance. There is a limit to how much oil or perfume you can take in one had. Add too much and it affects the appearance and qualities of the burning candles. If you overdo it, The candle may have a mottled surface appearance with wet areas. It may sputter a bit as it burns.
The amount varies between 1% and 5% by weight depending of the type. Most vendors will list the exact amount of the odor.
The last mistake that beginners I would call, the heat was too long adding the fragrance.
Candle fragrances are volatile oils. When you add them to a candle, they are encapsulated in the hardened was. When the heat of the candle was melting, the smell is released into the room (some natural scent is released, even if the candle is not lit).
If you add, the smell was the beginning of the melting process, the heat of melting of the wax will evaporate the volatile fragrance oil and let them out of the wash. That means your house smell wonderful when the candle, but the finished candle will not smell much.
The way to prevent this is add the scent immediately before you pour the wax. In this way begins to cool and was catching the scent immediately.
Now you know three common mistakes people make when they start adding to their scented candles. Avoid these and you're away from the game.
Of course, other things go wrong if you make scented candles. Discover more insider tips on making scented candles at:
